Steel Legion

Commander's Briefing

Welcome to the front lines. Steel Legion places you in command of an elite mechanized combat force deployed across a series of increasingly complex battlefields. Your steel soldiers — heavily armored mechanized units of varying classes — are the most powerful weapons in your nation's arsenal. But raw firepower alone will not win this war. Victory requires intelligent unit deployment, resource management, and real-time tactical decisions under pressure.

This is a military strategy game where every decision has consequences. Deploy the wrong unit in the wrong position, and you waste precious resources that could take minutes to rebuild. Leave a flank unprotected, and enemy forces will exploit the gap. Steel Legion rewards commanders who think two moves ahead and adapt their strategy when the battlefield situation changes.

When you play Steel Legion online, you are stepping into a real-time strategy experience that demands both quick thinking and careful planning.

Your Steel Forces: Unit Deployment Guide

Infantry Mechs

The backbone of any effective fighting force in Steel Legion. Infantry mechs are affordable, quick to produce, and effective in large numbers.

  • Cost — Low resource investment
  • Speed — Fast movement across the battlefield
  • Durability — Low armor, vulnerable to heavy weapons
  • Best use — Flanking maneuvers, capturing resource points, overwhelming isolated enemy positions through numbers

When to Deploy Infantry Mechs

Deploy infantry mechs in the early game to establish map control and secure resource nodes. They are also valuable as a screening force — placing them ahead of your heavier units absorbs enemy fire and reveals enemy positions. Never send infantry mechs against fortified positions alone. They lack the durability to survive sustained bombardment.

Heavy Assault Mechs

The battering rams of your steel legion. These massive, slow-moving units carry devastating weaponry and thick armor plating.

  • Cost — High resource investment
  • Speed — Slow, cannot reposition quickly
  • Durability — Maximum armor, can absorb enormous damage
  • Best use — Breaking through enemy defensive lines, absorbing damage while other units maneuver

When to Deploy Heavy Assault Mechs

Heavy assault mechs are your answer to fortified enemy positions and tough defensive lines. Deploy them when you need to punch through a wall of enemy defenses. Protect them with supporting units — a heavy assault mech alone is vulnerable to being surrounded and overwhelmed by faster enemies.

Artillery Mechs

Long-range units that rain destruction from a distance. Artillery mechs cannot defend themselves in close combat, making them purely offensive support units.

  • Cost — Medium resource investment
  • Speed — Moderate
  • Durability — Low armor, must be kept behind front lines
  • Best use — Bombarding enemy clusters, softening defenses before an assault, area denial

When to Deploy Artillery Mechs

Always deploy artillery behind your front line. Their range is their greatest asset, and keeping them safe allows them to deal continuous damage throughout the battle. Target clusters of enemy units for maximum efficiency, as artillery splash damage affects all units in the impact area.

Support Mechs

Specialized units that do not deal significant damage but provide critical battlefield support through repairs and shields.

  • Cost — Medium resource investment
  • Speed — Moderate
  • Durability — Moderate armor
  • Best use — Keeping heavy assault mechs alive, extending the durability of your front line, providing emergency repairs during intense fighting

When to Deploy Support Mechs

Deploy support mechs once you have established a front line of combat units. Position them behind your heavy units where they can repair damage without being exposed to direct enemy fire. A single support mech can extend the life of a heavy assault mech by fifty percent or more, making them one of the most cost-effective units in the game.

Battlefield Commands

Mouse Controls

Steel Legion uses a comprehensive mouse-based command system:

  • Left click — Select a unit or group of units
  • Left click + drag — Box select multiple units within the dragged area
  • Right click on ground — Move selected units to that location
  • Right click on enemy — Command selected units to attack that target
  • Right click on friendly unit — Command support mechs to repair or shield that unit
  • Ctrl + left click — Add a unit to your current selection
  • Double left click — Select all units of the same type currently visible on screen

Keyboard Shortcuts

Experienced commanders use keyboard shortcuts to issue orders quickly:

  • 1 through 5 — Create control groups. Select units and press a number key to assign them. Press the number again to instantly select that group
  • A key — Attack move. Units move to the target location but engage any enemies they encounter along the way
  • S key — Stop. Units halt their current action immediately
  • H key — Hold position. Units stay where they are and attack enemies in range but do not pursue
  • R key — Retreat. Units move back toward your base at increased speed

Resource Management

Gathering Resources

Resources in Steel Legion come from two primary sources:

  • Capture points — Designated locations on the map that generate resources when controlled by your units. Send units to stand on these points to capture them
  • Salvage — Destroyed enemy units leave salvage that your units can collect for bonus resources

Spending Priorities

Resource allocation is one of the most important strategic decisions in Steel Legion. Here is a general priority framework:

  1. Secure resource income first — Deploy enough infantry mechs to capture and hold at least two resource points before building expensive units
  2. Build a balanced force — A mixed army of infantry, heavy assault, and support mechs performs better than an army of any single type
  3. Expand gradually — Do not overextend. Secure one area of the map before pushing into new territory
  4. Save for critical units — Sometimes it is worth waiting to accumulate enough resources for a heavy assault mech rather than spending immediately on more infantry

Tactical Formations

The Hammer and Anvil

Position heavy assault mechs in a defensive line (the anvil) and send infantry mechs around the enemy flank (the hammer). When the enemy engages your heavy units, the flanking infantry closes in from behind, creating a devastating crossfire.

Artillery Screening

Place infantry mechs in a loose line ahead of your artillery. The infantry detects and delays approaching enemies while the artillery bombards them from safety. Pull the infantry back if they take too much damage, and replace them with reinforcements.

Support Core

Surround a pair of support mechs with heavy assault units. The support mechs continuously repair the assault units, creating a nearly unbreakable formation that can slowly push through any enemy position. This strategy is resource-intensive but extremely effective in the late game.

Tips for New Commanders

  • Always scout the map before committing your forces. Knowing where the enemy is positioned prevents costly surprises
  • Do not ignore the minimap. It shows the entire battlefield at a glance and helps you spot enemy movements early
  • Defeating enemy units earns experience that improves your mechs over time. Aggressive play that trades evenly still benefits you through experience gained
  • If you lose a battle, retreat and rebuild rather than feeding units into a losing fight. Preserved resources let you recover faster
  • Each map has terrain features that affect combat. High ground provides a damage bonus, forests offer concealment, and bridges create choke points that favor the defender
